Injection Sclerotherapy – Frequently Asked Questions

Injection Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment for small varicose and spider veins. A solution (sclerosant) is injected into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and fade over time. This improves both appearance and symptoms by redirecting blood flow to healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy is effective for:

✔ Spider veins – Small, web-like veins close to the skin’s surface.
✔ Small varicose veins – Early-stage varicose veins that do not require surgery.
✔ Reticular veins – Medium-sized blue or green veins beneath the skin.

You may be a suitable candidate if you:

✔ Have small varicose veins or spider veins.
✔ Do not have severe venous reflux disease.
✔ Want a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment.

A consultation with a vascular specialist will help determine if Sclerotherapy is right for you.

Sometimes, sclerotherapy might be performed in conjunction with other modalities (eg radiofrequency ablation, mini phlebectomies) tailored to the patient’s medical condition and needs.

  • Minimally invasive – No surgery or incisions required
  • Quick procedure
  • No downtime – Patients can resume normal activities immediately
  • Effective results – Noticeable improvement within a few weeks
  • Minimal discomfort – Performed with a fine needle, causing only mild irritation

Step 1: Application of anesthetic cream

A numbing cream is applied to the targeted areas 15-20 mins before the procedure.

Step 2: Cleaning & Preparation
The targeted area is cleaned and prepared for injection.

Step 3: Injection of Sclerosant
A fine needle is used to inject the sclerosant solution into the vein.

Step 4: Vein Closure
The solution irritates the vein walls, causing them to collapse and seal shut.

Step 5: Healing Support
Compression stockings may be recommended to enhance the healing process.

The procedure itself generally takes between 15 to 45 minutes, depending on how extensive the treated areas are. It is typically performed in the outpatient clinic setting.

Most patients experience mild discomfort or a slight burning sensation during the injection, but it is generally well tolerated. The procedure only requires topical anesthesia.

7. What is the recovery process like?

✔ Walk immediately after the procedure to promote circulation.

✔ Compression stockings may be recommended for 1 to 2 weeks.

✔ Minor swelling, bruising, redness or pigmentation may occur but resolve with time.

✔ Avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths, or sun exposure for a few days.

The number of sessions depends on the size and number of veins being treated. Some patients see full results after one session, while others may require multiple sessions (typically 2-3 sessions) for more complete resolution.

Sclerotherapy is a safe and widely used procedure, but potential side effects include:

⚠ Temporary bruising, redness, swelling or pigmentation.
⚠ Mild discomfort at the injection site.
⚠ Rare cases of skin discoloration or small ulcers.
