Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon | Singapore

Understanding the cost of varicose vein treatment in Singapore is important for those seeking relief from this common condition. Varicose veins, which can cause discomfort, or lead to more serious health issues, require effective and often individualized treatment plans.

The cost of these treatments varies widely depending on the severity/extent of the condition, the specific procedure chosen, and the venue of the facility chosen for the surgery. In general, the overall medical bill comprises the surgeon and anesthetist’s fees, the cost of the device used for the procedure, as well as the facility charges. Dr. Darryl Lim, a varicose vein specialist, offers a range of varicose vein procedures like Radiofrequency Ablation, Clarivein mechanochemical ablation, Venaseal, Sclerotherapy, and even open vein surgery.

Types of Varicose Vein Treatments Available in Singapore

At Dr. Darryl Lim’s clinic, we offer a comprehensive range of varicose vein treatments tailored to meet individual patient needs. Dr. Lim will advise you on the most appropriate treatment modality after a thorough assessment of your condition. At times, a combination of treatment modalities may be required. Here are some of the commonly performed procedures.

TreatmentIdeal forHow it works (and feels)
Lifestyle tweaks & compression stockingsMild aching, pregnancy, long-haul flightsGraduated compression, brisk walks, and leg elevation ease symptoms but don’t erase the visible veins. Perfect as a first step or while you’re expecting.
Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)Leaking long or short saphenous trunks with obvious bulging veinsA catheter gently heats the vein wall to about 120 °C. The faulty vein collapses and is reabsorbed by body over time, blood reroutes to healthy veins. Procedure time ~20 minutes per leg.
ClariVein® Pharmacomechanical AblationLeaking long or short saphenous trunks – “no-heat” treatment of the segments of these veins in close proximity to nervesA rotating wire plus a low-dose sclerosant irritates and closes the vein shut. Most describe it as a mild vibration rather than pain.
Mini-phlebectomy (ambulatory phlebectomy)Large, lumpy varicose veins that remain after trunk closure2-3 mm nicks are made and the diseased vein segments gently teased out; generally no stitches needed, only paper strips. Bruising fades in two weeks.
SclerotherapySpider veins and small reticular veins
(no underlying leaky vein trunks)
A fine needle delivers a foam or liquid solution that seals the vein from the inside. Done in the clinic in 30-60 minutes; you may need more than one session for optimal results.
VeinGogh® Ohmic ThermolysisSmaller spider veins, residual “spider” veins after sclerotherapyA hair-thin probe delivers a quick current burst, instantly coagulating the vessel. Feels like a brief pin-prick (somewhat similar to lasers).

Factors Affecting the Cost of Varicose Vein Treatments

The cost of varicose vein treatments in Singapore is based on several components. Understanding these factors can help you better estimate your treatment expenses.

Severity of the Condition

The extent of your varicose veins can significantly impact the cost. More severe cases may require more complex and extended treatments, thereby increasing the overall expense.

Surgeon and Anasthetist’s Fees

This is priced according to MOH’s Fee Benchmarks recommendations. This is readily accessible to the public on the MOH website.

For example, the cost of Radiofrequency Ablation (1 leg; SD713V) can range from $4,300 to $7,300- with the higher end of the fee benchmark associated with a more complex procedure.

Consumables and Facilities

The cost also includes consumables (specialized equipment for the procedure like catheters, sheaths or wires) and facilities (hospital or day surgery center fees). The type of facility where the procedure is performed can also influence the total cost.

Cost of Treatment in Singapore – At a Glance

We know medical bills can feel like a maze, so here’s a quick, plain-English guide. The table below lists the commonly used surgical codes for varicose vein procedures and the typical surgeon’s fee range, based on the latest Ministry of Health (MOH) fee-benchmark and the Table of Surgical Procedures (TOSP). Do keep in mind: the final bill also reflects things like case complexity, single-use surgical consumables, the anaesthetist’s fee, and the choice of hospital facility the surgery is performed in. If you are ever unsure, just ask – our team will walk you through an itemised estimate before anything is booked, so there are no surprises.

Will Insurance and Medisave Help Pay for Varicose Vein Treatment?

Yes – most of the time. Once a duplex ultrasound shows significant reflux (“leaky valves”), the major Integrated Shield Plans usually recognise the procedure as medically necessary. How much they cover hinges on your plan tier and whether you have a rider, but many patients discover that their share is limited to the MediSave portion or a modest co-insurance payment.

Here is the simplest path to clarity:

  1. Send us your policy details. Our team will run the pre-authorisation and tell you the approved amount before you commit to anything.
  2. Touch base with your agent. They can confirm any rider or co-insurance nuances.

MediSave helps, too. The withdrawal limit is set by the MOH surgical table for the procedure performed, but it can offset a good chunk – or, in some cases, all – of the bill.

No private insurance? No problem. Just have a chat with our  team – we’ll walk you through the available options and craft an affordable treatment plan that still delivers the care your legs deserve.

Why Are My Ankles Swollen? Common Causes, Hidden Risks, and When to Worry

Most ankle swelling is related to gravity and fluid pooling- often from prolonged standing/sitting, salty meals, weight gain, pregnancy, or vein-related pooling (chronic venous insufficiency). If swelling is persistent, worsening, associated with ankle skin itch/discolouration, or improves noticeably with leg elevation, venous reflux becomes the most likely culprit. If swelling is sudden and one-sided, painful, red/warm, or you have breathlessness or chest discomfort, seek urgent medical assessment.

5 Things Not to Do If You Have Varicose Veins (And Why They Make Things Worse)

If you want to prevent varicose veins from getting worse, focus on reducing venous pooling and pressure. The biggest culprits are staying still for too long, ignoring swelling or skin changes, wearing restrictive clothing in the wrong places, heavy straining with poor technique, and assuming the condition will “stay the same”.

Foods You Should and Shouldn’t Eat If You Have Varicose Veins

A vein-friendly diet is usually one that’s high in fibre, rich in fruits and vegetables, lower in salt and ultra-processed foods, and steady on hydration. Done consistently, it can reduce swelling and discomfort. However if you already have venous reflux, you’ll still need proper assessment and (possibly) treatment for lasting relief.

When Can I Start Exercising After Varicose Vein Surgery?

Most patients can start walking immediately (often the same day) after varicose vein treatment. Light exercise is commonly fine from around day 5–7, while running, heavy lifting, and contact sports are usually better left until about 2–4 weeks, depending on the procedure and how much bruising or tenderness you have. If you had extensive microphlebectomy (multiple small incisions), you may need a little longer for recovery.
