Treatment and Management Options

Treatment depends on the aneurysm’s size, growth rate, and overall risk profile. Small aneurysms that pose minimal danger can often be managed conservatively through regular monitoring and blood pressure control. Medications to manage cholesterol and prevent further arterial damage are also recommended.

When the aneurysm exceeds 5.5 cm in the abdomen or 5.5–6.0 cm in the chest—or if rapid growth occurs—surgical repair becomes necessary. The two primary procedures are Open Surgical Repair and Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR).

Advanced Endovascular Repair (EVAR)

EVAR is a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. It involves inserting a stent graft through small groin incisions and guiding it into place using imaging. The stent reinforces the weakened aortic wall and redirects blood flow through a new channel, reducing pressure on the aneurysm and preventing rupture. Compared to open surgery, EVAR offers faster recovery, less pain, and shorter hospital stays, making it the preferred approach for many patients.
