The most common sign of DVT is sudden swelling in one leg, usually starting in the calf. Pain may feel like a cramp, throbbing, or tenderness when touching the calf. The skin may become warm or red, and superficial veins may look more visible or “rope-like.”
Some DVTs produce very mild symptoms — or none at all — which makes awareness crucial. Even when symptoms are subtle, they can still progress to pulmonary embolism if untreated.
Seek emergency care if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, or coughing blood. These symptoms can indicate a blood clot that has travelled to the lungs.
The primary and most accurate test for DVT is a duplex venous ultrasound, which we perform on-site for same-day results. This painless scan checks vein compressibility and blood flow; a vein that doesn’t compress often indicates a clot. Ultrasound also shows the clot’s exact location and extent.
In more complex cases — such as suspected pelvic clots or arm DVT — additional imaging like CT venography, MR venography, or CT pulmonary angiography may be used. D-dimer blood testing helps evaluate clot risk, especially in low-risk patients.
Fast diagnosis prevents the clot from growing or breaking off. At our clinic, we can scan and begin treatment immediately, significantly reducing the risk of pulmonary embolism and long-term vein complications.
